You know that feeling you get when you’re in a place that energizes you, uplifts you, sparks your creativity, and you realize at that moment, “these are my people”! That’s how it feels to be at Content Marketing World. I’m not sure there’s another event where you can gather with 1000’s of other strangers and feel like everyone “gets you”. It’s a giant soup of talent and experience, with people sharing challenges, successes, best practices, questions, ideas and support.
There are so many sessions it’s almost impossible to catch everything on your list (someone told me she was triple-booked!) but the networking breaks offer the chance to spend time meeting strangers and talking about all the cool tools and software available to help us do our jobs better. And if you still can’t get enough, there are the best kick-ass dancing parties to give you another chance to be up close and sweaty with your fellow marketers. It’s truly a bonding experience!
This year had some great experiences I’d like to share. Not in any order or timeline, they were:
“Everyone can be an innovator. Even you. Become your own innovation factory.” Thanks to Carla Johnson for sharing some new approaches and thinking around achieving ideas and goals—"find inspiration anywhere, practice creativity, and compete on a broader scale.” @carlajohnson
“There are no mistakes, only gifts.” Tim Washer, such a great way of looking at life! This can apply to so many things—try looking at your marketing efforts in the same way. @timwasher
“Customer experience is like beauty, it radiates from the inside out”. This came from a marketing operations specialist that really understands the process of what’s needed structurally to get things right, and to keep your business true to the customer. Kelly Hungerford nailed it. @KDHungerford
“Tabula rasa.” Create a “clean slate” and change the things not working for you to create the future you want. Record. Repeat. Remove. This held meaning on so many levels. Joe Pulizzi, the man who branded content marketing in orange, shared his experience when you clear your mind of things and come to a place where you understand the essence of what’s imperative. @joepulizzi
“Email is the only place where people (not algorithms) are in charge.” Ann Handley Which is so true and why there is still a high value on the use of email and e-DM’s in our business. They are the one true form of our message that is communicated directly to our audience without filtering, scraping, or editing. @marketingprofs
What I gained:
3 new books to read
6 new networking contacts/friends with some amazing women who’ve been honing their craft and become mighty successes over the last 10+ years!
5 new ideas about where I’d like to go with my business
3 new things to update in my website
1000’s of miles of confidence in my ideas, my experience, and that what I’ve done is helpful, useful, and of interest to others!
